Found these unfinished things from a few years back. I must have been going through an experimental Pop-Art-esque phase. The colors remind me of this book I just got this week of David Weidman's work. I also got this which I highly recommend of a compilation of stuff from the sketchbooks of illustrators like Edel Rodriguez and the great Christophe Niemann -- which totally inspires me to do more when I find time. Time. Ugh.

This quote seems perfectly suited to describe abandonments. I'm obsessed with abandonments.
The first two are sketches of urban abandonments. Any place that's been built for, occupied by, and sheltered humans that has been abandoned and left to rot and decay totally fascinates me. I troll sites like WebUrbanist and Lost America for riveting documentations of these. Maybe because I find it such a fitting metaphor for life -- nothing is as it seems, behind facades and walls there are hidden truths and tragedies, unbeknownst to most. Essentially the simple truth that nothing lasts forever; all worldly things die.

There's a strange beauty and frustration that these great structures that took so much time, money, meticulous planning and effort on our parts to build for shelter, pleasure, etc. were erected simply to be abandoned, neglected and claimed back by nature.

Anyways, the next sketch is a pen scrawl from one of my fave places...the Santa Anita Racetrack.

Something Old, Something New

Something NEW:
This is something I've been working on.....figuring out how to get my work on a lamp. After trial and error, I created this handmade lampshade with my work on it. I'm hoping to offer it for purchase soon. Hopefully, people will enjoy it! And, a little Q&A I recently did.

I've been into cardboard taxidermy so I decided to make my own deerhead. I created my own template, (which was really challenging!), cut foam core, then tore out the pages of a really old, yellowed book to cover the pieces with.

Something OLD:
I came across this old piece I did a few years back while I was sitting in on a "Graphic Design for Entertainment" class. This was based off Tom Waits' song "Big Joe and Phantom 309." Obviously, I was totally out of my element in this class and this was my attempt at the entertainment style.

I was inspired by old school European fashion illustration/posters, but wanted to experiment with doing it in a new school way. Took my existing sketch, scanned in colored tissue papers, and laid the linework over it.

In other news, my work is now carried at Mono Lake and The Dandy Lion with new pieces up at the local Belles Nest. A GIVEAWAY of one of my pieces is coming up, hosted by Simone LeBlanc of Project Runway.....and a big FREEBIE with my work from Owl Barn is on the horizon. I love free stuff don't you?

My good friends, high school sweethearts, Melissa and Lee are getting married and they asked me to fill a tall order, which is to create the graphics to be printed on tote bags that are to be their wedding favors. I was more than happy to oblige - the task was to include 11 destinations that they've been to, create a logo for them as a couple that included a frog prince, limit the colors to just black and teal, and somehow tie it all together, without making it appear too "girly," that would all fit on a 12" x 8" area. I hope I succeeded. Congrats you two!

This past month of February saw the shocking deaths of two amazing creative geniuses in their respective fields - illustrator Nick Dewar and fashion designer Alexander Mcqueen (above my little tribute piece of an image from one of his amazing indoor rain fashion shows). Both were so young at 37 and 40 years old, respectively, but their impact will be felt for years to come. Thank you for all your wonderful, inspiring work - you will be greatly missed. RIP.
